Schalk Burger to make come back for Stormers

South Africa and Stormers flanker Schalk Burger will make his comeback from a severe neck injury when he plays for the Stormers in a Super 14 warm-up game this weekend.

Stormers coach Kobus van der Merwe has named Burger in his team to face the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

Burger, the 2004 world player of the year, needed a neck operation after being injured in the second Test against Scotland in June.

While he was out injured, the Springboks lost their next five matches and only won five games the entire year.


2007 Super 14 Fixtures

The South African, New Zealand and Australian Rugby Unions (SANZAR) have released the schedule for the 2007 Super 14. The 2007 Super 14 season will start a week earlier to allow for the Rugby World Cup.

The competition starts off on 2nd February with the Blues hosting the Crusaders in Auckland. It finishes up with the grand final to be played on the 19th May.

It is still unknown which team will be the 5th South African side. The South African Rugby Union (SARU) had originally planned for the Southern Spears to replace that country’s bottom-placed team this year, the Cats, for 2007 and 2008.

Crusaders crush Stormers

The Crusaders defeated the Stormers 51-23

Determined defence from the Stormers kept the Crusaders at bay during the first half. Going into the halftime break the Stormers lead 6-3.

In the secondhalf the flood gates opened and the Crusaders scored 48 points including seven tries.

The win takes the Crusaders to number two on the table, behind the Waratahs. While the loss for the Stormers virtually eliminates any hope they had of making the semi-finals.

Crusaders - Tries: Aaron Mauger, Leon MacDonald, Dan Carter, Rico Gear(2), Caleb Ralph (2). Conversions: Andrew Mehrtens (2), Dan Carter (3). Penalties: Carter (2).

Schalk Burger in doubt for Crusaders match

April 15th, 2005

The Stormers’ star forward, Schalk Burger, is in doubt to play against the Crusaders Newlands on Saturday.

Burger sustained a heel injury against the Reds and has been bracketed with Pietie Ferreira at Number Eight.

Fullback, Werner Greeff, has been ruled out due to concussion, coach Gert Smal has chosen Gaffie du Toit as his replacement..

Stormers narrowly beat Reds

The Stormers kept their slim semi-final hopes alive when they narrowly beat the Reds 15-13 at Cape Town on Saturday.

Stormers - Tries: Jean De Villiers, Luke Watson. Conversion: Chris Rossouw. Penalty: Chris Rossouw

Hurricanes snatch win against Stormers

March 25th, 2005

In the opening match of week 5 of the Super 12, the Hurricanes snatched a narrow victory from the Stormers.

The game was played in wet conditions which both teams had difficultly adapting to. With neither team was able to score a try, the game was decided by kicks.

The Stormers lead for much of the game through penalties to Chris Rossouw.

The Hurricanes won through a last minute drop goal by Jimmy Gopperth.

Hurricanes - Penalties: Jimmy Gopperth (3). Drop goal: Gopperth.

Stormers - Penalties: Chris Rossouw (3).


Waratahs defeat Stormers

March 20th, 2005

The Waratahs beat the Stormers 25-10 in a Super 12 game at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday.

The Waratahs were without fullback Mat Rogers because of injury and lock Justin Harrison who has voluntarily stood down pending a misconduct charge.

The Waratahs dominated the game and were able to cross for three tries. The Stormers sole try game in the last minute of the game when captain Neil De Kock was able to cross the try line.

The win is the fourth for the Waratahs this year. While the Stormers only have one win to their name this season.

Stormers drop Breyton Paulse

March 17th, 2005

The Stormers have decided to drop in-form winger Breyton Paulse for their Super 12 match against the Waratahs in Sydney.

Paulse has been replaced by Tonderai Chavhanga. The change appears to the result the coach Gert Smal wanting to experiment with combinations, rather than Paulse being dropped because of his form.

In other changes to the team Gaffie du Toit will move to fullback in place of the injured Werner Greeff. Chris Rossouw come in at flyhalf to fill the gap left by du Toit.

Adri Badenhorst comes into the side at No 8, with Joe van Niekerk switched to the flank. With Luke Watson being rested.

Stormers defeat Sharks

The Stormers defeated the Sharks 26-12 in their opening Super 12 match on Friday.

Winger Breyton Paulse scored a pair of tries for the Stormers, while fellow Springbok winger scored the Stormers other try.
