Two new players in Ireland 6 Nations Squad

Ireland coach Eddie O’Sullivan has selected two new player in the 2007 Ireland 6 Nations Squad. They are Munster centre Barry Murphy and Leinster back Robert Kearney.

John Kirwan signs up to coach Japan

Former All Black and Italian coach, John Kirwan, has signed a contract to coach the Japanese national rugby squad.

Kirwan playing in 63 Test matches for the All Blacks, then coached Italy’s national team from 2002 to 2005. However poor results saw him sacked from the Italian coaching role.

Kirwan will coach the Japanese side through the 2007 Rugby World Cup where they will play in the same pool as Australia, Wales, Fiji and Canada.

Schalk Burger to make come back for Stormers

South Africa and Stormers flanker Schalk Burger will make his comeback from a severe neck injury when he plays for the Stormers in a Super 14 warm-up game this weekend.

Stormers coach Kobus van der Merwe has named Burger in his team to face the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

Burger, the 2004 world player of the year, needed a neck operation after being injured in the second Test against Scotland in June.

While he was out injured, the Springboks lost their next five matches and only won five games the entire year.

Chris Latham suffers serious knee injury

Queensland Reds and Australian fullback Chris Latham could miss the 2007 Super 14 season because of a serious knee injury.

Latham injured his knee during a Reds pre season training session. Preliminary scans point to torn anterior cruciate and medial ligaments. Which will likely require a full knee reconstruction.

Also it will not leave much time to prepare for the Rugby World Cup, which starts in early September.

Rugby World Rankings Round Up January 2007

With the start of the new it is the perfect time to see how Rugby World Rankings currently stand.

There haven’t been any games involving the major nations lately so things have been pretty stable.

Currently the IRB has New Zealand ranked first by a large margin. The All Blacks would have to lose several games to give up the top rank. Behind them is the group of France, Australia, South Africa and Ireland, all within 1.5 points of each other. The coming 6 nations tournament will likely see these rankings change. Four newcomers in France’s Six Nations Squad

France rugby coach Bernard Laporte has selected four newcomers in his 40-man squad for next month’s Six Nations tournament.
Centre Romain Cabannes, hooker Benoit August, prop Laurent Emmanuelli and fullback Anthony Floch were the uncapped players named.
